چکیده

A stereo vision system for detecting 3D-objects is presented. The method uses a pair of externally uncalibrated cameras and is able t o detect objects located on a staircase. Detection is based on differencing stereo pair images, where a warping transform is used to overlay the left onto the right image, and vice versa. The 3D camera positions are obtained through model t~ased pose estimation and disparity is used to obtain the warping transform. The demonstrated application is staircase surveillance

Monocular Scene Reconstruction for Reliable Obstacle Detection and Robot Navigation

In this paper, we present a feature based approach for monocular scene reconstruction based on extended Kalman filters (EKF). Our method processes a sequence of images taken by a single camera mounted frontal on a mobile robot. Using different techniques, we are able to produce a precise reconstruction that is free from outliers and therefore can be used for reliable obstacle detection. In real...

A Navigation Aid for Blind People with Walking Disabilities

Many blind people require travel aids to navigate in unknown environments. However, the majority of the corresponding devices are not designed for people with walking disabilities. In this paper, we present a smart walker that does not only provide walking assistance but also enables blind users with mobility impairment to avoid obstacles. By leveraging existing robotics technologies, our syste...

Plane-based detection of staircases using inverse depth

Staircases are a common feature in urban environments. Nevertheless they often pose a navigational challenge to both visually impaired people and autonomous mobile systems. In this paper, we propose a plane-based approach to the problem of staircase detection using depth data in inverse depth coordinates. This forms a basis for our long term goal of assisting visually impaired people in navigat...

Forced-choice staircases with fixed step sizes: asymptotic and small-sample properties

Visual detection and discrimination thresholds are often measured using adaptive staircases, and most studies use transformed (or weighted) up/down methods with fixed step sizes--in the spirit of Wetherill and Levitt (Br J Mathemat Statist Psychol 1965;18:1-10) or Kaernbach (Percept Psychophys 1991;49:227-229)--instead of changing step size at each trial in accordance with best-placement rules-...

An Obstacle Detection Scheme for Vehicles in an Intelligent Transportation System

Road obstacles cause serious accidents that have a severe impact on driver safety, traffic flow efficiency and damage of the vehicle. Detecting obstacles are important to prevent or to reduce such kind of the accidents and fatalities. However, it is difficult and becomes tricky because of some problems like presence of shadow, environmental changes or a sudden action of any moving things (e.g.,...
